Northern Michigan’s breathtaking Tunnel of Trees originates on Harbor Springs real estate and 16 miles later concludes in Cross Village. This blended canopy of trees shade M-119, taking those who live in Harbor Springs or who are visiting on a visual journey. Bicyclists and motorists both traverse this scenic route which is literally a curving, winding road with intertwined trees stretching overhead.
Driving through the Tunnel of Trees is an experience like no other. This route is historic and full of ancient legends. Once an actual Native American trail its beauty is not to be denied. It is easy for travelers to imagine the Ottawa walking through this gorgeous landscape. Places among it are known to be haunted. A perilous curve named and marked appropriately as Devil’s Elbow, was Native American named Motchimaniton translating to “Where Spirits Live”.
Stops along the way create a wonderful day trip. Grab a sandwich from Gurney’s or eat in at Mustang Wendy’s. Turn off on Lower Shore Drive and head into the Thorne Swift Nature Preserve. Hike the Cedar Shore trail right down to Lake Michigan’s shores. A bit north of Harbor Springs real estate is the Pond Hill Farm where fresh produce and homemade preserves are available for purchase. Stroll the vineyard here and maybe stay for some wine tasting.
Marvel at the wonder of nature with the scenic Tunnel Of Trees drive. Take some time to be together with loved ones or seek some quiet solitude. Either way the sights to be seen will definitely be worth the trip.
